After his wife suddenly leaves without explanation, the shy geography professor Fernando is left devastated and adrift. In a sudden change of heart, he travels to the northwest of Portugal, where he assumes the identity of a gardener who passed away unexpectedly. He finds himself at the quinta of an eccentric owner named Amália, with whom he forms an unlikely, gentle bond. As he settles into a life that isn't his own, he begins to find a sense of peace in this quiet, melancholic portrait of starting over.
